The story behind the print

This image was taken at sunrise in Sayulita, Mexico while I was out photographing a Surf Lifestyle brand shoot. When I’m waiting for a surfer to catch a wave, I’m always looking around. I’m constantly noticing the different angles, the way the light is changing, the colours, and the little moments happening around me.

What caught my eye that morning was the way the sunrise illuminated the landscape. The clouds had absorbed these beautiful pinks and purples, while the sky behind them glowed with soft oranges and yellows. In the foreground, the water reflected those same colours, and between them sat this beautiful line of silhouetted palm trees. It all came together to create a scene that was impossible to ignore. It reminded me once again how a landscape I’ve seen countless times can look completely different in a new light.

This image holds a special memory because most of my colourful photographs in Sayulita were taken at sunset. With the sun setting directly over the ocean, the humidity often created these incredible vivid colours. Sunrise was different. The sun rose over the mountains and, more often than not, there were buildings interrupting the view.

On this particular morning, everything aligned. I was able to capture a clean composition that held all the beautiful colours of sunrise, creating a completely different palette to the sunsets I had become so familiar with. It was simply too beautiful not to photograph.
