The story behind the print

This image was one of those moments that kind of caught me by surprise. Again, it was one of those in-between moments while I was waiting for the surfers to catch waves. I’m always looking around at the different angles, the light, the colours, and everything happening around me.

What caught my eye was how she was tucked behind the layers of water. The top layer of the ocean and the sky almost blend together. I really love this image because of the colour scheme. The crisp morning whites, the deep blues, and the small touch of orange from her paddling by. I just really love how much space there is around her. Every time I look at this image, it feels like taking a breath. It was one of those moments I fleetingly captured.

For years, I actually thought it was the girl I had been photographing surfing that morning. It wasn’t until much later that I realised it was actually my good friend Marie, long before we met. Over the years we became really close friends and later discovered she was the surfer in this image, which makes it even more special.

This photograph also inspired the colours I used for the Salty See rebrand. With some advice and guidance from a very talented creative friend, I found myself looking back at this image and tweaking the blues in my branding to match it.

I think that’s one of the things I love most about photography. Some images reveal more of themselves the longer you spend with them. Every time I look at this one, I notice something new.
