The story behind the print

This photo was taken during the California and Baja California wildfires in October 2019. We were staying in Valle de Guadalupe in Baja California, when we woke up to the fires creeping over the hill. The sun hadn’t really risen yet and all you could see were the flames on top of the hill looking over us. We didn’t need to evacuate but we were keeping a close eye on it. Later that evening when I was shooting in the water at Tres Emes, Ensenada, the fires had created a hazy film over the ocean and, at sunset, it transformed into a misty warm glow with a metallic texture to it. It was disturbingly beautiful. To think people were being evacuated and losing their homes and businesses while I floated in the ocean capturing this fusion of smokiness and sea mist was definitely a hard one to wrap my head around.
