The story behind the print

This image was taken at a new surf break near where I lived that I’d never been to before. It was tucked away and could only be reached by boat, which made it feel like a little hidden secret.

The light was quite harsh as it was the middle of the day, but that’s one of the things I love about photographing in those conditions. The light creates these really strong contrasting blues, from the lighter blue of the sky to the rich cobalt blue of the ocean in the foreground.

What I love most about this image is the palm trees just poking out in the background. At the exact moment I took the photograph, these beautiful lens flares formed on my water housing lens port. They weren’t intentional. Most of the lens flares in my photographs aren’t. I’ll often see them beginning to form through the viewfinder and quickly point my lens more towards the light to exaggerate them.

I love how all the elements come together in this image. The colour, the palm trees, and the lens flares create this really tropical scene. It’s a feeling that appears in so many of my photographs, but this image captured it in a new way.
