The story behind the print

This image was taken in Baja California, a completely different landscape to what I’m used to photographing. Instead of tropical palm trees, there were cacti, rugged desert landscapes, and beautiful mountains.

Again, it was one of those moments in between while I was photographing Nique Miller. I was waiting for her to paddle back out after catching a wave when I turned around and this scene caught my eye.

I love how the morning light highlights the layers in the mountains, with the soft, blurred water in the foreground. Each layer holds a different colour, from the sky, to the mountains, to the ocean, with a few lens flares adding another layer to the image.

It’s a scene that feels very familiar within my work, but with a completely different landscape. Seeing a new place for the first time through my already curated lens reminded me that, no matter where I am, I’m always drawn to the way light, colour, and layers come together.
